Winter Lake Superior

This past weekend, we also stopped at Lake Superior for some quick photos of the ice and snow. It was very cold and windy!

Weekend Snow

Handmade Christmas

After last Christmas, I decided that I wanted to try to sew as many Christmas presents as possible. I still think I have room for progress, but this year I did complete two winter quilts, one for each of our families.

I had meant to make a third for us so that we would all have matching quilts and be able to think of each other whenever we cuddled under them. Alas, I only had enough fabric for two. Darn–now I have to buy more fabric for our quilt. Actually, I’m not sure if I’ll have time for that. I have several other sewing projects that are clamoring for my attention…

Winter Quilt Two

I am going to do a very simple pattern for my winter quilt. I think some of the prints are too pretty to cut into small pieces.

cut strips: I'm ready to piece!

The cardinal and winter scene fabric is cut into large rectangles. I then cut strips from the other fabrics. These strips will be sewn together in rows of three and then cut to match the size of the large rectangles. At least, that’s the plan thus far… With all of the snow flurries and colder weather, I am anxious to have my winter quilt for snuggling and retiring my Woodland Creatures until next fall.

Winter Coat

Yes, I know it’s just the beginning of November, but here in the UP, winter is merely a chilly step around the corner. To keep me warm, my dear in-laws purchased a lovely L.L. Bean parka for me as Christmas present.

TYS, 10/31/10

It is “Lake” blue: an appropriate color name and choice for my new home. Brendan picked out the color; I think he did a nice job. My new coat is so toasty! I haven’t started wearing it just yet, as we’re currently enjoying some balmy 40* weather. I also figure I should allow myself to acclimate a bit, before breaking out the real winter gear.

Brendan and I went to Gander Mountain this weekend and purchased some boots. They were having a buy two pairs, get one free sale! (I <3 sales!) Brendan bought some Columbia hiking/hunting boots (no camo, I promise!) and a pair of hiking/casual shoes, while I picked out a pair of Columbia winter boots. Last weekend someone (a true Yooper) had commented on my “Tennessee” winter boots (a pair with three-inch heels—all five of my pairs of winter/fall boots have heels) and asked if I had anything else for winter footwear. I guess spike heels and UP winters don’t get along, eh? I think my new boots will meet with any Yooper’s approval. I like them; they match my coat!
