Happy Fall, Y’all!

Our front porch was looking a little sad, especially after our neighbor put out fall flowers, a wreath, and even a scarecrow. After decorating the bank for fall, I was definitely in the mood to make my home festive, too. Thankfully Hobby Lobby and Michael’s had their fall decor items on sale.

I purchased the little pumpkins at Hobby Lobby along with a garland of fall leaves that I cut up for the wreath. The mums are from Mom Sullivan purchased through Lee’s school. And everything else is from Michael’s.

I embellished the grapevine wreath with my trusty glue gun, fall leaves, miniature gourds, and some wired ribbon. I’m pretty pleased with the results. (Mom, you will have to show me how to make a wire-ribbon bow; yours are the best!)

Now I just wish I used the front door so I could enjoy my efforts more.

P.S. My faux pumpkins aren’t obviously fake looking, are they? I just really liked the idea of being able to reuse them every year since I have no real interest in carving the real ones or dealing with getting rid of them at the end of the season.

I did some sewing for my dear Dad Knapp. He likes to sit in his easy chair with a large Coke and watch sports. Therefore, I sewed up a set of coasters that feature four popular athletic balls (football, soccer, baseball, and basketball) on one side and gray with scarlet “writing” on the other. The scarlet and gray coordinate with the living room and, more importantly, they are the colors for Ohio State University.

Spring Bag

I’m ready for spring, so I sewed up a new bag.

There are three pleats on each side. The lining is the same green fabric as the handles. There’s also an inner pocket. The handles are top-stitched with brown thread, and when I sewed them to the bag, I put pink thread in the bobbin to disguise their attachment to the band.

I would prefer to have larger, dark wood buttons, but the brass ones still look nice.

I reclaimed a zipper to make a small pouch for my lotion/mirror/handkerchief/etc. The lining is the same green as the lining and handles on the bag.

The brown and green fabric came from Hobby Lobby, the pink fabric is from Portage Quilt House, and the buttons came from Wal-Mart. Simplicity 2685 is the same pattern I used for my mushroom bag.

I love it! Now, I just need the snow to melt . . .

Winter Quilt

Back in Tennessee, I bought some holiday fabric from Hobby Lobby. I finally found some coordinating cotton here in the UP to start a quilt. The blue, cream, and brown is from Wal-Mart. The winter scene, cardinals, snowflakes, and pine-cones came from Hobby Lobby.

I think instead of a “Christmas” quilt, it will be a winter quilt since nothing is overtly Christmas. That way I can use it for the entirety of the UP’s long winter season.

Cupcake Potholders

During my last week in Tennessee, in between packing and painting, I did a tiny bit of sewing. I decided my new apartment would need some new kitchen potholders! I used two different patterns from my two sewing books that were birthday presents: One-Yard Wonders and Amy Butler’s In Stitches. The fabric came from my stash. The pink cupcake fabric and brown polka dot material comes from Jo-Ann’s. The colorful stripes fabric was a clearance fabric at Hobby Lobby.

The Amy Butler one features wonky patchwork squares on the front. It is quilted with a diamond design and has a pocket for your hand.

The One-Yard Wonders potholder has a hanging loop and I free-motion quilted it.

I am pretty pleased and can’t wait to use them in our new place.

P.S. Maybe the cupcakes won’t look too terrible in our orange kitchen, there is some orange in this fabric…

Fabric Collecting

My newest quilting books says I should buy fabric that I like when I see it because it may not be there later. It also said I should probably just get a quarter of a yard. Well, you don’t have to tell me to buy fabric twice! I like buying quarter yards, too, because it doesn’t feel like I’m spending a lot of money (Brendan may disagree on that point).

Back in April, I bought this adorable fabric from Jo-Ann’s to make myself a quilt.

Edit: The far left fabric with the scrolling green pattern is from Hobby Lobby.

Aren't the bunnies cute?

Since I am waiting for the perfect backing for Jeanette’s quilt, I started it last week. I used a pattern from McCall’s Quick Quilts 2010 issue (the same issue that the “St. Brendan” pattern came from).

Here’s the quilt top. I ended up adding the mushroom fabric I used for my bag, and I didn’t use the light green polka dot material.

I’m not sure I like it. I think I should have used a darker fabric for the border. :-/ I guess even though individually I like the fabric, together they are too “warm”. I’ve always preferred cool colors.

I’m going to bind it with brown and I have no idea what I’ll use for the backing. Maybe once I quilt it, I’ll like it more…

Drapes Continued

I know this is fascinating, but I found the perfect tie backs for our drapes!

These were at Hobby Lobby for 50% off!

However, they were brown and I needed black.

Tablecloth is Complete!

At the latest sewing circle, I finished free motion quilting my tablecloth with my darning foot. It looks gorgeous spread out on our little table beneath my super cute salt and pepper shakers.

I got the shakers at Hobby Lobby. I love having them on my table especially with my newfound obsession of sitting at the dining room table watching the birds at my feeder. These little beauties don’t fly away when I approach!

Also, I’ve been meaning to post a picture of the beautiful cake platter Mom (Sullivan) gave me for my birthday.

Isn’t it gorgeous?

My table looks like spring now that it’s summer. Oh well. I’ll just hang on to the pretty season as long as possible. I adore pretty things.
