Happy Birthday, Aeris!

My little niece had her first birthday on July 3rd. Aeris looked so precious in her outfit.

We had lemonade,

fruit “kebabs”, chips and dip, cookies, and cupcakes.

Aeris loved her new riding toy.

Saturday: A Walk in the Park

My family came down from Ohio for a quick weekend visit. Brendan and I took them to Springbrook Park where we like to take walks.

The park has a lovely fountain, made even lovelier by the presence of my family.

The beauty of the park made us all contemplative, especially Jeanette, who channeled The Thinker.

There are several little creeks like this crisscrossing the park, as well as a little waterfall:

One of the most interesting things about our corner of the park is the random bamboo copse:

I think the bamboo made us all think of Jeremy and Kristin. The whole family was together in spirit!

Sewing Machine Cover

Mom and I made this sewing machine cover for my Kenmore 15408.

I brought my machine to Ohio so that we could sew. Mom and I agreed that I needed a cover for it, especially if I am going to be transporting it for my sewing circle. The machine has a handle and we created a bag with overlapping flaps that the handle of the machine fits through.

I bought this fabric from Jo-Ann’s with the gift card that I received from the Sullivans.

We definitely “winged” this project. Mom made some measurements and cut some rectangles.

We both received our Kenmores as Christmas presents. Mom got hers from my dad on their first Christmas as a married couple. Mom bought mine for me for Christmas the year before Brendan and I got married.

Mom did most of the sewing; I did the finishing touches.

The cover design is really quite clever.

1. Place machine in bag:

2. Fold over flap, inserting handle through the super-long buttonhole:

3. Fold over opposite flap, inserting handle through buttonhole again:

4. Zip up the sides:

Notice the darts on the side to keep it from gaping open.

It’s so cute! I didn’t really write up a tutorial since every sewing machine is different in dimensions. It’s a basic box bag design and took a little bit of trial and error. Mom and I just brainstormed and kept our seam ripper handy.

I sewed the pocket, side darts, buttonholes, and buttons.

I'm having fun!

Thanksgiving in Ohio

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving. We had a great day here in Ohio.

Brendan spent the morning cleaning his guns with my dad’s gun-cleaning kit.

Brendan also played with an electric knife. He was in charge of carving the delicious turkey.

After dinner and dessert, we played Scrabble Slam (a Scrabble card game). We walked over to Tania and Kevin’s in the chilly air. It was nice seeing the Christmas lights on our walk (can’t wait for the Zoo lights on Saturday.

Jeanette will probably have a better post. I’m still not very good about using my camera all the time. :}

Tomorrow, we get to see the Sullivan family! Both families in one weekend.

I’m thankful for my family.
