Cupcake Potholders

During my last week in Tennessee, in between packing and painting, I did a tiny bit of sewing. I decided my new apartment would need some new kitchen potholders! I used two different patterns from my two sewing books that were birthday presents: One-Yard Wonders and Amy Butler’s In Stitches. The fabric came from my stash. The pink cupcake fabric and brown polka dot material comes from Jo-Ann’s. The colorful stripes fabric was a clearance fabric at Hobby Lobby.

The Amy Butler one features wonky patchwork squares on the front. It is quilted with a diamond design and has a pocket for your hand.

The One-Yard Wonders potholder has a hanging loop and I free-motion quilted it.

I am pretty pleased and can’t wait to use them in our new place.

P.S. Maybe the cupcakes won’t look too terrible in our orange kitchen, there is some orange in this fabric…

Goodbye, Hobby Lobby

In addition to Jo-Ann’s, I have to say goodbye to Hobby Lobby.

I think the blue snowflakes will look lovely with my other Christmas fabrics, and I thought the Christmas owls were too fun and unique to resist.

I love this nativity print. I have no idea what I’ll do with it, but I couldn’t pass it up.

Think of me the next time you visit a craft/fabric superstore. Think of me and feel so bad that you send me a parcel of fabric.:D

Goodbye, Jo-Ann’s Craft Store

I had to visit my beloved Jo-Ann’s one last time before leaving for Michigan. I wasn’t expecting to purchase much, but I think the Devil was at work with a new shipment of fabric.

I came home with a few more cupcake prints.

Don’t you just love the Swiss Cake Rolls? I figure I’ll embellish a kitchen towel or two.

I also had to purchase some backing for my “Caer Sullivan” quilt. I love, love, LOVE this turquoise for the back! The swirls are also like the ones in the cream-colored turret in my pieced castle.

I can’t wait to be settled in Michigan so I can get to these projects!

Bible Story Quilt

A missionary came to our church in Tennessee (West Hills Presbyterian). He had a Bible story cloth with him. The International Mission Board makes fabric panels of forty-two pictures of stories from the Bible. These panels are used to spread the gospel to the non-literate peoples of the world. Missionaries teach the stories of the Bible using the pictures printed on the fabric. Each panel comes with a paper listing the corresponding scriptures.

I ordered a panel to make a quilt for my niece Aeris. On the back, I used flannel. The center is baby Hello Kitty framed by purple gingham. Jeremy and Kristin said that they preferred purple over pink, and I’ve always purchased Hello Kitty items for Jeremy.

I made the bias binding and stitched it to the back by hand.

This little blanket will be prefect for teaching Aeris stories from the Bible. When she outgrows it as a blanket, it will make a nice wall-hanging. I hope Baby Aeris likes it.

More Lanyards

My sewing circle (and English teacher friends) decided to tackle lanyards. I made each one of us a cupcake lanyard for our school IDs and keys. This way my sewing circle friends can remember me when I’m in Michigan.

While here to help us with the flea market, Mom gave me some treasures from Japan.

Jeremy and Kristin gave me a really cool paper craft book. I can’t wait to try my hand at something.

Mom and Dad gave me this cute stationary:

They also gave me this gorgeous compact mirror. I love the peacocks.

Every girl needs a beautiful handkerchief.

Best of all, fabric came home to me!

Lanyard

In an effort to wear my school ID this year, I made myself a lanyard.

TYS, 7/25/10

The fabric is a remnant I bought at Jo-Ann’s, and the clip came from an old bag.

It’s basically double-fold binding sewn down the edges.

I slid one end through the clip before sewing the edges together. I then flipped the loop and sewed across the straps, close to the clip with my zipper foot.

Easy-peasy!

Fabric Collecting

My newest quilting books says I should buy fabric that I like when I see it because it may not be there later. It also said I should probably just get a quarter of a yard. Well, you don’t have to tell me to buy fabric twice! I like buying quarter yards, too, because it doesn’t feel like I’m spending a lot of money (Brendan may disagree on that point).
